Toll fees are a central topic in truck transport, and their cost is a crucial factor in competitiveness. In the upcoming period, we can expect numerous price increases that will inevitably impact the operations and liquidity of transportation companies. The reform of the toll collection system for trucks in Germany came into effect on December 1, 2023, bringing significantly higher costs. Despite strong opposition from the transport and logistics industry and warnings that the price hike would push many small and medium-sized enterprises into an abyss, authorities did not deviate from their planned course.

Although the common denominator for the past 12 months across Europe for the road transport sector is mostly the same, each market has its characteristics. Imagine the following scenario: a rainy November afternoon, an unmarked police car stops in front of a pedestrian crossing in the town of Brzoze near Warsaw to let a pedestrian, wearing a fluorescent vest, cross. Just as the person is almost halfway across, a truck speeds from the opposite direction. The driver realizes the danger a few meters later, slows down, and stops behind a nearby intersection.

At the Intersection or Downhill? The first quarter of 2023 marked the second consecutive decline in road freight rates in Europe, signaling a significant shift compared to the period from the start of the pandemic until now. Although the past three turbulent years have taught us that expecting the unexpected is imperative and that every forecast can be questioned, a significant portion of analysts at the beginning of summer believe that road transport prices will continue to slide downwards for the rest of the year.

New Obligations and Challenges! The upcoming year brings another milestone for companies engaged in international transport across Europe. Starting from August 21st, all first-time registered trucks over 3.5 tons in the European Union will be required to be equipped with second-generation smart tachographs (SMT2).
